Atkinson Family | Day in the Life

Eight years ago, we photographed Alison and Reid's wedding.  And over the years, we have had the opportunity to document their growing little family several times.  But this one truly takes the cake.  While most of the family sessions we shoot are portrait sessions, every now and then, we get to go out and document a Day in the Life session.  And they are some of our absolute favorites.  What is a Day in the Life, you ask?  Well, it's where we focus less on the planned and more on the spontaneous.  The real life stuff.  The stuff that nobody else usually sees.  All those magical little in-between moments that make every day truly worth living.  Some Day in the Life sessions are 100% documentary, where we might show up when the kiddos wake up from their afternoon naps and we stay with the family until bedtime [think playtime, dinner, bathtime, storytime etc].  Or maybe we're there when everyone wakes up in the morning and we hang out until later in the afternoon [think breakfast time, getting dressed and ready for the day, watching morning cartoons, running errands, etc].  Just going wherever the family goes, tagging along on their daily adventures [no matter how "boring", like a grocery store or Target run], maybe a trip to the park or a museum, or maybe just playing at home in their pjs.  Whatever a regular "Day in the Life" means to them.  And on the flipside, some of the DITL sessions we shoot are more of a combination of documentary and portrait coverage.  We spend some time with the family, just hanging out and capturing whatever they would be doing, even if we weren't there [remember, all of those natural "boring" everyday moments].  But we also take some time to do some planned family portraits.  That is what this session was all about.  All of the Atkinson kids decided to get together and give their parents this session as a 35th anniversary gift.  How wonderful is that?  They got to spend some uninterrupted time with their kids and grandkids, and have a photographer there to capture all of those special little moments that normally go unnoticed. And best of all...they will get a custom designed book from this session so the memories will be preserved forever.  Mom/Grandma wanted to make sure to get some family portraits, so we started at Loose Park and then headed to Union Station.  And then after that, we all headed back to the house where they hung out, played with the kiddos [and the dogs], made a family meal, and watched the Royals game on tv.  Sounds about right KC, huh?  From the photos, it appears our boys in blue were winning [or at least doing some good stuff].  Amazing! Hang in there Royals fans...we WILL get back on track.  Anyway, when all was said and done, this family got some really fun moments captured, that they will hopefully treasure forever.  Thanks for having us along, Atkinson family! jason_domingues_photography_best_kansas_city_photographer_family_documentary_portrait_session_1jason_domingues_photography_best_kansas_city_photographer_family_documentary_portrait_session_2jason_domingues_photography_best_kansas_city_photographer_family_documentary_portrait_session_3
